The truth behind 123 agreement...

What is the truth behind 123 agreement. Is it beneficial for India. Lets examine the nuts and bolts of the agreement and decide for ourselves:

1. The 123 agreement is silent on nuclear testing by India, but makes it clear that the pact will not hinder or hamper India's military nuclear programme

2. The agreement commits the US to ensure uninterrupted fuel supplies to Indian reactors even if it terminates its cooperation and to help create strategic fuel reserve for Indian safeguarded nuclear reactors.

3. US to ensure India can have nuclear cooperation with the international community.

4. Either party (country) shall have the right to terminate this agreement prior to its expiration on one year's written notice to the other party

I wonder if the agreement ensures critical supply to our reactors, gives us global recognition and importance, does not deters nuclear testing by India, it must be really benefitial for our country.
Then what is the real "motto" of the protestors and people against the deal?

Your thoughts.
Ramanthan

Hi Ramanathan,

Your views seem to be in a very optimistic way. What if US denies to sell Uranium to us after all set up is done?
India had already experienced it when INDIA tested its first Atomic bomb(Buddha Smiling). US withdrawn from Uranium supply to INDIA.

By keeping in this mind, no Government will be ready to test nuclear bomb anymore. Obviously we require Power to our energy needs, but that can be done from various source of ways.

So basically government is not preferring to do all that but trying to go with US for all its future endeavour. There are must be some factors behind it.

One can be INDIA needs US support to grow globally.(so US 123 agreement is a way of cooperation which will eventually make INDIA a global power).

Second thing can be INDIA wants to be alley with US to counter attack emerging warning against INDIAN interest. So it needs US support in this.(123 agreement will pay way to further co-operation on this).

If everything goes fine, it will be good for INDIA always, but again we will be bound to do some favour to US in some of its CONCERNS.(we might be losing some of our traditional friends because of that).

Thanks,
Noor.

Hi Ramanathan, though you are optimistic, there are several questions unanswered- 1)We have more than enough Uranium and Thorium to last another 40 years or even more. So do we need to sign this to get Uranium? 2)If India signs the agreement, still America has the right to decide whether it is advantageous to them. Do we have such a right?
3) As reported by some newspapers, is it true that this deal will also bind us to allow US to take over our agri sector to experiment their genetically modified seeds? If so, it will open the Pandora's Box and will be the last nail in Indian farmers' coffins.
