Ahead of the first meeting of the United Progressive Alliance-Left committee to sort out differences on the nuclear deal with the US, Left parties on Monday toughened their stance saying nobody can convince them that the Hyde Act will have "no role or effect" on the bilateral agreement.
The 15-member Left-United Progressive Alliance panel on the Indo-US nuclear deal will have its first meeting on Tuesday as part of the exercise to address concerns raised by the four Left parties regarding the implications of the India-specific Hyde Act of the US on the country's independent foreign policy, sovereignty and its future weapons programmes.
But CPM seems to have already decided on its course of action for these discussions.
"All these issues we will discuss. But nobody will be able to convince us that the Hyde Act has no role, no effect on this bilateral agreeement. I know they will put very eminent lawyers from their side. But this is not a matter to be argued in a court of law," Communist Party of India-Marxist general secretary Prakash Karat said in Delhi.

The whole thing looks very fishy. Too much secrecy. And the US admin is very determined to get it through. Everyone keeps harping about energy needs of India. Have a thought the US itself with all its nuk tech is still addicted to oil how then will India be able to fulfill its energy needs with the same tech? US itself is not building any new reactors inspite of the high oil prices. Is that not surprising? Nuclear energy is not clean energy as it is made out to be. The risk of radiation from the reactor (earthquake) and the spent fuel remains for years together and can effect the health and genetic make up of future generation. Why don't we pursue other renewal sources of energy? Solar, Tidal, wind etc. Perhaps we should start such things at the household level. Hope Almighty will prevent Bharat Mata from being a colony once again.
